About Skill India Initiative
India is moving fast towards its dream to become Super Power but still there are some hurdles to cross. The progress of any country lies in the hands of its young population. India is not the exception to this. Unfortunately large section of Indian youth is still deprived of formal education. To empower the undereducated or informally educated young population, Government of India has launched an ambitious project- Skill India Initiative- on World Youth Skill Day. The project aims to train over 40 crore people in India in different skills by 2022.
Objective of Skill India Initiative
The main objective of the Skill India Initiative is to provide vocational training to school dropouts, existing workers in unorganized sector, ITI graduates, etc. to enhance their employability. This will be done by optimally utilizing the infrastructure available in government institutions, private institutions and in the industrial sector. Existing skills of the persons can also be tested and certified under this scheme. It is envisaged that the empowered youth will contribute to the country’s GDP, overall progress and social wellbeing.
Under this Initiative, Pradhan Mantri Koushal Vikas Yojana training was initiated in 1,000 centers across all States and Union Territories in India on the launching day itself, covering 50,000 youth in 100 job roles across 25 sectors. Special camps are being organized at 100 locations with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanghatan (NYKS) and SMS campaign is active to build awareness about the Initiative. The important feature of Skill India Initiative is that it has focused on demand driven short term vocational training courses based on Modular Employable Skills (MES). The design of the various courses has been finalized in consultation with industrial sector.
Minimum qualification required to join Skill India Initiative is that persons should have completed 5th standard. Testing and certification of skills that persons have already acquired informally is also available under this project. After completion of fresh training, testing of trainees is being done by independent assessing bodies. It is made clear that these bodies are not involved in training delivery, so that impartial assessment is ensured.The essence of the scheme is in the certification that will be nationally and internationally recognized.It is expected that such a certification will offer the youth better employments and raise their confidence level.
